Academic Policies

The academic year of the Bangladesh University consists of three semesters (Spring, Summer and Fall). Information about courses and offering has been mentioned in the respective sections of this bulletin.

Grading Policy and Performance Evaluation

A system of letter- grade marking is used for the purpose of evaluating a student’s performance in a course. A+, A. A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, and D are considered passing grades. F is a failing grade (F, I and W). Besides, I stands for (incomplete), W (withdrawal), R (Repeat). Credits for courses with these grades do not apply towards graduation and are not used for the calculation of the grade point average.

For calculating CGPA the numerical equivalence of grades are set as below: (This is in accordance with the uniform grading system introduced by UGC Memo No. 464/04/2690/100 dated 13/06/2006)

Basis of grading

The final course grade is based on an overall evaluation of students’ performance in assignments, examinations, quizzes, case works, term papers, laboratory tests, class participation and class attendance. Each course teacher determines the grade of a student on the basis of his performance against a pre disclosed grading policy of the teacher concerned.

Incomplete Grade

An incomplete letter grade ‘I’ will be given only when the student has been in regular attendance and has done satisfactory work and has furnished proof  to the instructor within two weeks of the end of the term that the work cannot be completed because of illness or other circumstances beyond the student’s control. An incomplete grade not made up by the end of the next term shall be converted to the grade of 0.0 (F) by the Registrar/Controller.

Change of Grade

Within 1 (one) year of the awarding of the grades, final grades may be changed by the instructors on a change of grade form, only if there has been an error in computation. The grade change must be approved by the Head of the Department.

Academic Difficulty and Disqualification Rules
  1. A student will be in Academic Difficulty if he or she receives, during any three consecutive quarters, two grades of F or three grades of D.
  2. A student will be disqualified as a candidate for the undergraduate (UG) degree and will not be allowed to re-enroll in the program if he or she receives:
    1. during any academic year, grades, of F for nine credit hours or grades of F or D for 1.7 credit hours.
    2. during  any the first and second years, grades of F for 14 credit hours or grades of F or D for 25 credit hours;
    3. during three years, grades of F for 21 credit hours or grades of F or D for 37 credit hours,

A student who has been disqualified as an undergraduate (UG) student for unsatisfactory grades may submit an application to the Registrar for re-admission.

Faculty Responsibilities

At the beginning of the semester, each faculty member should give an outline of the course describing the methods of evaluation of students’ performance by way of essays, tests, examination, seminar presentations, the relative weight of these methods in relation to the overall grade, and the timing of each major evaluation.

Examinations
  1. The university has high ethical standard, and concerted efforts are always made to conduct all examinations by fair means. The students are evaluated by their teachers at all times, especially when they give test quizzes and tutorials during the class hours.  Conducting Mid-term examination and Final Examination is a collective enterprise. All faculty members have to be serious about ensuring fair examinations. All kinds of appropriate measures are taken to prevent students from cheating on the exams.

  2. Students shall be provided with clear information about the expectations of the examiners, including the types of anticipated questions.

  3. Students shall have the opportunity to review their answers in written examinations within four months of the reporting of the grades. A recovery fee of Taka=500/- may be set to cover administrative costs, including photocopying.

  4. A student who has failed to appear in either statutory Mid-Term or Semester Final Examination or both for serious illness or death or accident in the family or other valid reasons may submit an application to the Head of the Department for make-up examination. This application must be supported by valid documentary proof and a fee of Taka=1200/- Per examination per course to cover the costs of setting questions, moderation, investigation and printing of question-papers etc. One third of this goes to the faculty members and two third is retained by the university accounts department. The Head of the Department may arrange such tests after necessary approval from the Vice-Chancellor.

  5. A fee of Tk. 1200/- per examination per course will have to be paid for any grade improvement examination.

Appeals
Students with health problems or other personal difficulties which may adversely affect their performance in or their ability to complete course work, examinations or other departmental assessments may request for special consideration.

Requests, supported by a medical certificate, or other appropriate evidence, should be, submitted to the instructor or co-coordinator of undergraduate/graduate studies as soon as possible or within 48 hours of the deadline or date of assessment.

Incomplete Grades

A student may be assigned with a grade of “I” for incomplete course work. He/She will be allowed to complete the incomplete course works within four weeks of the beginning of the following semester. A student will get the alternative grades based on the completed part of the course if he/she fails

To complete the course work within the stipulated time. The student has the responsibility to take the initiative in making up the incomplete as specified by the instructor. If action is not taken within three weeks of commencement of the next semester, the “I” grade will automatically be converted to “F”.

Withdrawal

The grade (W) is assigned when a student officially drops a course within the date mentioned in the academic calendar for the semester.

Repeating Courses

If a student fails to get a passing grade in a course, he/she will be awarded an “F” grade and will have to repeat the course. The student must re-take a failing course when offered after paying a fee of Tk. 1200/- per examination per course and must also successfully complete the course. The grade earned on the retake will be shown in the transcript along with “F” grade earned in the first time the course was taken. But the grade earned on the course (s) repeated will be substituted for “F” in computing CGPA. A course can be retaken only once. Improvement of course grade will only be allowed to students with “C, “D”, or “F” after payment of above mentioned fee.

Academic Standing

For graduate program, a student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 to remain in good standing. Students of under-graduate program with CGPA between 1 and 2 after the first two semesters will be placed on probation for the next two semesters. If students placed on probation fail to raise their CGPA to at least 2 after the probation period they will face dismissal from the course. If a student’s CGPA falls below 2, he/she will again be placed on probation.

Academic Dismissal

A student whose CGPA drops below 1 after the first two semesters will be automatically dismissed from the course. Students who fail to pass in remedial course in two attempts will also be automatically dismissed for the course.

Once dismissed for scholastic failure, a student is ineligible to enroll in further courses. Hence, re-admission to the university will not be allowed.

Leave of Absence

A leave of absence may be granted to a student up to three semesters. But the student must be in good academic standing (not on academic probation or subject to dismissal). A student applying for such leave, must mention a definite semester for re-registration and must register within three semesters of the date of leaving school. Only one leave of absence can be granted. A leave of absence is granted through the Dean of school’s office. A student who does not return for registration during the specified semester will be classified as official withdrawal and must apply for re-admission though the administration office.

Grade Report

Grade reports are generated by the Controllers Office and mailed to every registered student and also to his /her guardian soon after the conclusion of each semester. Students are solely responsible for their academic progress and should consult their academic advisors
Immediately if their performance is unsatisfactory. Failure to maintain satisfactory progress will lead to loss of financial aid, academic probation, or dismissal, or other equally serious consequences.
